Celebrating History: The Premiere of "Ugly Little Monkeys"

In a city steeped in history, one film is shining a spotlight on a remarkable chapter that’s been five decades in the making. “Ugly Little Monkeys,” directed by David Valdez, tells the true story of Los Changuitos Feos de Tucson – a group of kids who grew up in the working-class barrios of Tucson, Arizona during the 1960s.

What started as a humble neighborhood endeavor soon catapulted these youngsters into the international spotlight as world-class musicians. Their journey from the streets of Tucson to stages around the globe is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the enduring spirit of community.

The Premiere Event: A Night to Remember

The anticipation reached its peak as “Ugly Little Monkeys” made its debut at a special fundraiser screening at the iconic Fox Theatre. The initial screening was a sold out house with 19 of the original Changos present. The atmosphere was electric as the audience gathered to witness this poignant tale unfold on the big screen. After the showing, some of the original Changos took to the stage while a youth mariachi group serenaded the crowd. They answered questions and brought their story to life off the screen.

Los Changuitos Today

The group was recently honored by Mayor Regina Romero for its profound impact on our community by proclaiming Los Changuitos Feos de Tucson Day in Tucson surrounded by some of its original members.

In addition to the documentary, the legacy of Los Changuitos Feos de Tucson lives on through their music. A CD featuring original Changuitos Feos members and some alumni is now available on various platforms including Spotify, Amazon Music, Pandora, iTunes, and more. This collection of timeless tunes serves as a tribute to their enduring impact on the Tucson music scene.
